ORGANIZATION OF THE FILM INDUSTRY

Production
Films are produced by a variety of organizations and individuals. The major studios controlled virtually all production, but independent producer has recently become prevalent. The major studios now finance and distribute many films made by independent companies.
Probably the biggest change in production in the late 1990s has been the increased number of films that are release each year. Prompted in part by the additional revenues from the home video and the theatrical box office, a total of 461 films were released in 1999, an increased of 12 percent since 1990. The major film production companies (Sony, Paramount, 20th Century Fox, MGM, Disney, Warner Brothers and Universal) will each produce 15 to 20 films a year.

Distribution
The distribution arm of the industry is responsible for supplying prints of films to the thousands of theatres located across the United States and around the globe. In recent years, distribution companies have also supplied films to tv network
